Mathematics

Accelerated Mathematics - Preparing academically ready students for Geometry placement (sophmore level) during their freshman year.  This program begins in seventh grade.

• Accelerated Pre-Algebra (taken in seventh grade) begins with a solid review of integer operations, simple equations, rational numbers. Course continues with graphs and functions; exponents and roots; ratios, proporations and similarity; percents; 2-D and 3-D geometry; statistics; probability; multi-step equations and inequalities; introduction to linear Algebra;  sequences; and polynomials.
• Accelerated Algebra (taken in eighth grade) follow the curriculum set in the Grosse Pointe School System.  The course begins in review of expressions, equations, and functions; real number system; and equations.  The course continues with linear equations and inequalities; systems of equations and inequalities; exponents and exponential functions; polynomials and factoring; quadratic equations and functions; radicals; distance and mid-point formulas; and rational expressions and functions.

"At Grade Level" Mathematics - Preparing students for an Algebra placement during their freshman year.

• Sixth Grade Mathematics course begins with an introduction to ratio concepts and reasoning.  Also included is a solid review of multiplication, division, common factors and multiples, and system of rational numbers.  The course continues with arithmetic and algebraic expressions, one-variable equations and inequalities.  Students will learn how to use dependent and independent variables in quantitative relationships.  This concept will be taken into linear functions (tables, equations, and graphs). Geometry presented includes area, surface area, and volume.  Statistical variablity and data distribution are included.  The course ends with an in-depth study of integer operations and the Pythagorean Theorem.
• Seventh Grade Mathematics builds on previous studies of rational numbers, properties of operation, and the geometric concepts of area, surface area, and volume.  Student will use numerical and algebraic expressions, equations and proportions using "real life" situations such as simple interest, taxes, markups/downs, gratuities and commissions.  Linear relationships, both direct, indirect, and inverse are studies.  The course ends in a study of statistics and probability.
• Eighth Grade Mathematics begins with a solid review of integer operations, simple equations, rational numbers. Course continues with graphs and functions; exponents and roots; ratios, proporations and similarity; percents; 2-D and 3-D geometry; statistics; probability; multi-step equations and inequalities; introduction to linear Algebra;  sequences; and polynomials.
