Middle School is an extremely important part of the educational process, as it prepares students to be success in high school. Our Lady Star of the Sea Middle School provides academic excellence to our students, easing the entry into either Public or Catholic high schools.
Middle School at Star begins in the 6th grade. This year is packed with changes for our students including classes in a different part of the building, lockers, and many new academic teachers. Specials teachers that the students have known throughout elementary school provide stability for our 6th graders. Highlight of this year is a three-day Camp Storer excursion in October.
Seventh grade is the midway point towards high school. Students are taught by subject area teachers, seeing four to five different instructors during the day. Accelerated Pre-Algebra (7th grade) and Accelerated Algebra (8th grade) are available to students who performed well in 6th grade math and scored high on an Algebra Readiness placement test. This track prepares hard-working, motivated students for honor sophomore level math placement during their freshman year of high school. A couple of special events occur in 7th grade, including a trip to the Sacred Heart seminary to begin the vocation discernment process and a year-end class trip called a "Day in Detroit."
Eighth grade is the capstone of the educational process at Lady Star of the Sea. As for spiritual development, our 8th graders complete a month long study of sainthood in October, complete the "33 Days to Morning Glory Retreat" and receive the sacrament of Confirmation, in May. Lastly, Star’s 8th graders enjoy a number of special events including going to Stratford, Ontario to see a play in October, flag football game vs. St. Paul in November, and a four-day trip to Washington, D.C. in April. Graduation is marked with a “grads only” party is Thursday night before the ceremony, with parents joining the students afterwards to view the class video. Mass and commencement are celebrated the following day.
