General Music PreK/K curriculum emphasizes basic vocal development, matching pitch and singing simple melodies as well as rhythmic exploration. Students discover the joy of music making through singing and rhythm games and pre-reading activities with a cross curricular emphasis.
·General Music 1-5 employs a comprehensive Kodaly Curriculum through which students learn to read and write music fluently and sing well. Repertoire includes music in all styles and periods, including liturgical music in preparation for worship. While developing a love for music, students are also introduced to the music from different periods in history.
Musical Drama is a theatre workshop class offers students a comprehensive experience in theatre, from the audition process and acting, to staging, costuming, set design, and choreography. The class culminates with three full performances of a Disney musical.
Guitar Students learn the basic skills of guitar playing, including tuning, reading music, finger picking and strumming, and reading/playing basic chords. While their skills of performing as an ensemble are developed, they also become comfortable playing solos.
Piano/Music Technology teaches students the basic skills of playing piano, further their ability to read music, and are introduced to music composition and technology through garage band using the keyboards and iPads.
Bell Chimes uses and reinforces music reading skills, students form a cooperative ensemble performing a variety of seasonal, sacred, and secular music.
The Our Lady Star of the Sea Youth Chorale is a group of vibrant young singers, grades 3 – 5, who led the sung worship monthly at Sunday Masses. The chorale also performs throughout the community, has led the sung worship at Blessed Sacrament Cathedral, and also participates in the annual AOD youth choir festival. Membership in the chorale enhances vocal development and artistry in performance.
The Our Lady Star of the Sea Schola is a select group of more advanced singers, grades 6 – 8, who regularly cantor at Sunday Masses and perform throughout the community. Repertoire includes both sacred and secular music with a heightened emphasis on vocal production and artistry in performance.
