Religion
This is a very exciting year for students, as they prepare to receive their first Holy Eucharist. Daily, they experience and study their faith which encourages them to grow as young Christians. Students begin to recognize the significance on their own identity in Christ, that His presences is always with them, and that He paid the price for their sin therefore calls them to penance, reconciliation, and to His body and blood.
Language Arts
The students continue to develop their reading skills with an emphasis on phonemic awareness, building competency of high-frequency words, building vocabulary, individualized fluency goals, and striving for comprehension of text through group and individual readings. These skills are reinforced through the acquisition of the development of correct grammar/mechanics, the Writing Community, telling more and achieving individual writing goals of fiction, nonfiction, letter writing and poetry.
Math
Students build on prior math knowledge by learning new numerical concepts, understating numbers to 1,000, basic facts and their relationships and applicable addition and subtraction solving with 2 and 3-digit numbers. They continue their awareness and real life examples of money and time as well as length of customary and metric units, and gathering of data. The beginning concepts of geometry and fractions is also introduced. Students also explore different tools and strategies that help them solve problems. Star's math program provides an online component that emphasizes an interactive approach and allows the use of digital content to further explore concepts.
Science
Through the study of matter, plants and animals, and Earth’s materials, students begin to understand the working of life around them. They apply their knowledge through engineering and technology skills and inquiry based discussions.
Social Studies
Students find their own stories interwoven into exploring communities, the Earth, the present and past, needs and wants and how the government works.
