Many of Star's students volunteer to service at Jesus' altar. It is a priviledge to do so. Students in grades 4th and up are eligible to volunteer.
The Student Council is comprised of 2 representatives and 2 alternatives from of the grades 4-8. The Student Council sponsors a variety of charity projects and acts as a committee for presenting student concerns to the school administration. A Star teacher acts as a moderator and guides the students in the process of student government.
Star Lights is an after-school program for all of our students to explore their interests beyond traditional academics. Held in the fall and the spring, students meet once a week directly after school to learn about topics ranging from sign language and cooking to literature and creative dance. With more than a quarter of the student body participating in an average session, we are one of the only local Catholic schools to offer this level of organized enrichment.
The audition-based drama class affords students
the opportunity to explore all phases of musical theater, including acting and singing, choreography, costuming, staging, directing, and sound production. The drama is completed with scenery created by students in the advanced art class, who also comprise stage crew. Most importantly, all participating students gain self-confidence tempered with humility, continue to develop creative skills and critical thinking, and learn the value of commitment and teamwork.
The Our Lady Star of the Sea Youth Chorale has enabled our parish and school community to more deeply experience their faith through music. The mission of our choir is to answer Christ’s call to serve by singing for the honor and glory of God in the most important gathering of the Church, the Liturgy. The program includes a choir of grades 3-5, and for more advanced singers, a specialized Schola comprised of grades 6-8. Grades 3-5 rehearse on Thursday immediately after school until 4:15, and the Schola rehearses Fridays at recess. Our Youth Chorale/Schola leads our sung worship once a month at Sunday Liturgies and major feast days such as Christmas Eve Mass. Last year the Youth Chorale was invited to sing with the Adult Choir on Holy Thursday, as well as Holiday Nights in Greenfield Village/The Henry Ford and gatherings throughout the community. These fine young musicians also performed with over 100 other children at the Pueri Cantores Youth Choir Festival at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Detroit.
The purpose of National Junior Honor Society is to recognize those students who have demonstrated exemplary scholarship, leadership, citizenship, character and service. NJHS students run the school recycling program and participate in community service.
Students must maintain membership by maintaining a 93% grade average in their core classes and participate in all meetings and service endeavors.
Forensics is the art of public speaking. In this club, students are coached and then perform their piece at an annual Eastside Forensics League competition. There are many entertaining categories, such as storytelling, drama, prose, declamation, duos, multiple, and poetry. Star has two teams of students. One from students in grades five and six, and another from those in grades seven and eight. All students have this unique opportunity to participate in forensics. Students learn how to be comfortable speaking in front of an audience, and it’s a fantastic form of self-expression.
The Brother and Sister (Buddy) Program is a very exciting and important part of student life at Star for over 30 years. Each year the younger children are paired with a child from an older grade to spend the year together doing holiday crafts and special lessons as well as having fun.
Some grades attend Mass with their Big Buddies so they can have a special older role model helping them learning about the parts of the Mass as well as learning the prayers, songs and the appropriate way to receive communion. Sacraments are also celebrated.
This year long program is a wonderful way to learn from the older students and have fun spending time together. The little children really enjoy and love having a big brother or sister to help and guide them. The older students enjoy being a role model for their little buddies and really get to learn about them and care for them as well. It brings a wonderful gift of service to our school and helps the children of all grades feel they have someone special caring for them and looking forward to each time they get to be together.
Our Lady Star of the Sea School is excited to offer their Kindergarten through 5th grade girls the opportunity to be part of their Multi-Level Girl Scout Troop. Together, our Troop focuses on making friends, learning through new hands-on experiences, exploring how our Faith and the Girl Scout Law intertwine and discovering how these things can help us make our world a better place. Our Troop earns badges while working to encourage the girls to “Discover, Connect and Take Action”, in various categories such as STEM, Outdoors, Life Skills, Entrepreneurship & Community Service Projects, all while strengthening the friendship between one another outside of the classroom. Girl Scouts meet monthly in The Pointe. For more information email Troop76233@gmail.com
Participation in athletics provides students the opportunity for personal growth in a number of areas including: commitment, leadership, sportsmanship, responsibility and teamwork. In addition, athletics provide an avenue for common experiences to be shared by students, coaches, faculty, parents, alumni and friends all of which build school spirit and community. Athletes are expected to follow all school rules as well as those specific to the athletic department. Our immediate goals are to teach our student athletes to have fun at sports; play hard and fair; respect coaches, officials, opponents and parents; and to win with humility and to lose with grace. While winning is important, our longer-term objective is not to win at all costs but to create an experience of significance.
